Why Santa Clarita Homes Struggle With Heat

The Santa Clarita Valley sits inland and a bit higher than the LA basin, and it runs hot and dry through the summer, with afternoons that routinely climb past 100 degrees and big temperature swings between day and night. That kind of heat lands hard on the roof and pours into any home with a thin, uneven attic above it. By August, a lot of homeowners here are running the AC nonstop and still fighting an upstairs that never cools off.

Santa Clarita is largely a valley of tract homes, much of it built from the 1970s through the 2000s as Valencia, Saugus, Canyon Country, and the surrounding communities grew. Newer does not always mean well insulated. Many of these homes were built to the minimum energy code of their day, with builder-grade attic insulation that has since settled, and with the furnace, air handler, and a long run of ducts sitting up in a superheated attic. When we look at these homes, the upstairs problem usually comes down to a few things working together: a hot, under-insulated attic directly over the bedrooms, ductwork that loses cooling on its way up, and attic ventilation that traps the day's heat instead of releasing it. Fixing the upstairs is rarely about one product. We treat the attic as a system so the second floor stops behaving like a separate, overheated house.

Where the old material is contaminated or badly disturbed, we remove and clean it out first so the new insulation has a clean, sealed surface to work over.

On the two-story homes that define the valley, a radiant barrier under the roof deck can take a real bite out of the afternoon heat load over the bedrooms, and replacing failing or undersized ductwork keeps the cooling intact on its way upstairs.
